The Legend of Mahsuri

Long time ago, between 1762 and 1800 when Kedah was governed by Sultan Abdullah Mukarram Shah, lived a pretty young woman named Mahsuri with her family in Padang Matsirat of Langkawi island. Langkawi island is located in the northern part of Malaysia. Mahsuri’s father and mother moved from their native Phuket, Thailand to the island of Langkawi in order to get a better life. Although Mahsuri was a new arrival in the island, but all the villagers easily realized her beauty and kindness. Most of them said that Mahsuri was the most beautiful woman in the island. And suddenly she met a warrior named Wan Darus.
“You are very beautiful.” Said Wan Darus on his way to go home.
Mahsuri stopped a little while and said, “Who are you Mr.?”
“Hi. My name is Wan Darus. I’m one of the warrior in this country. I think you’re a new immigrant here. May I know your name?” asked Wan Darus politely.
“My name’s Mahsuri. Yes, I have just moved here 2 weeks ago.” Mahsuri answered with a sweet smile.
Wan Darus was amazed, as that was his first time to meet a new friendly and beautiful woman. So he kept in touch with her. He introduced and took her to every single place she didn’t know yet at that time. Mahsuri respected very much for what Wan Darus had done with her. For Mahsuri, Wan darus was such a mature and wise person. Until one day they fell in love. Soon, Mahsuri was proposed by Wan Darus and they had a beautiful wedding rejoicing with attending of all the villagers in Langkawi island.
A year after their marriage, Mahsuri gave a birth to a baby boy and he was named Mat Arus.
“Father, where will you go?” A little Mat Arus asked while seeing his father brought a lot of stuffs.
“Hi, I will not go anywhere. I just want to buy something at the nearest shop. Don’t be so naughty with your mother at home ok?” Wan Darus answered with lots of compassion, as he saw his son just kept playing with some toys and had not understood enough with what he implied. Siamese War forced Wan Darus to leave home and fought with others warriors. He leaved his little boy and his wife alone.
“Take care with your self.” Mahsuri hugged his husband with tears fell down.
“Please wish me safe and take care of our son. I will back home soon, I will never let you live alone for longer.”
They had a sad romantic farewell and after days passed, Mahsuri realized about his husband duty. So she started to accustom about those conditions.
One day, there was a traveler man came to the island named Deraman. While Deraman was walking along the street, he met Mahsuri.
“Excusme, may you help me please?” Deraman made Mahsuri stopped.
“Yes, what can I do for you?” Mahsuri answered with a very welcome voice.
“My name’s Deraman. I’d love to travel in this beautiful island. Could you guide me  to some interesting pleaces here? Because I arrived here yesterday and still didn’t know much about this island.”
“My pleasure. I will help you but now I need to go home first. My son already waited for me. If you want to join also, please join with me.”
Day by day passed, Mahsuri guided Derama for several months and they became a good friend. As Mahsuri had a great behavior and also beautiful appearance, lots of women in the entire island got jealous, more over Mahora, the village chief’s wife who was also Mahsuri’s sister-in law. She took a chance to spread some negative rumors about Mahsuri. She said that Mahsuri was having an affair with Deraman in absence of Wan Darus. The villagers easily believed with those rumors and started to hate Mahsuri.
“Hey, naughty woman! Come out! You must be killed! You are not proper enough to live in this island!” cried all the villagers in fornt of Mahsuri’s house.
“Yes, while his husband leaving her with her son, she did date with a new handsome man and even usually went out to travel together. What a naughty wife she is!” cried Mahora with distinct tone to support the condition. Mahsuri open the door and was very shocked by them.
“What are you doing? Deraman is my good friend. I help…”
“Stop your nonsense!” cried some of them cutting Mahsuri’s explanation.
Mahsuri tried many times to say the truth that she was just a friend of Deraman, but all the villagers did not trust her. They did agree with Mahora’s rumors and strongly stated Mahsuri to death.
Mahsuri could not believe that she would be killed rudely by her closest neighbors just because of her weakness to tell the truth. She could not do anything when all the villagers tied her to a pole. One by one of the villagers stabbed her with keris, but however she did not die. When she got a few seconds without feeling hurted, she tried to plead the innocence but no one believed her. Then with hard breath, she said
“My neighbors, I will be die if you kill me with my family keris and if this is the appropriate time for me to die, I will accept but the thing that all of you must know that Deraman is just my friend. However, if you could not respect my innocence, I wish that this island will get a bad life in every single thing for until seven generations.”
After several failed attempts to kill her, Mahsuri told the villagers that she was only can be killed by her family keris. When she stabbed by her family keris, a while blood flowed from her body to signal her innocence. The villagers shocked to see her white blood and realized their mistake, but that was too late. Mahsuri already passed away and she cursed the village to have bad luck for seven generations.
Not long after the tragedy, Wan Darus came back home and shocked to hear about his wife’s death. He decided to leave Langkawi with his son and his family in law.

The local people of Langkawi believed the legend, and some bad facts happened in the seven generation period, like some wars were happened, the local people burnt their rice field due to avoid Siamese souldiers took their fields. The place now become the popular place being visited by the tourist and well known as “Beras Terbakar or Burnt Rice”
